(16) High Altar – marble reredos

High Altar - marble reredos

The marble reredos was carved by Axel Haig shortly after the church was consecrated.

There are three main figures. The first, a bearded John the Baptist, is dressed in an animal skin, carrying a tall, narrow cross and the Lamb of God. The second, Christ in Glory, is shown raising his hand in blessing and proclaiming  "I am the light of the world", while the third figures holds a chalice.

The smaller figures are cherubs holding scrolls proclaiming the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, Mercy and Charity. There are a further two angels, one either end of the reredos.

The inscription reads "Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."
