Stone carvings

The stone carvings on either side of the porch represent Church and State.

The finials to the lintel over the door are the carved heads of a bishop and a king, representing church and state. Although records do not explicitly say so, it is most likely that the stone carvings are the work of Axel Haig himself.

The heads have been identified as likenesses of  Bishop Knut Henning Gezelius von Scheele who was Bishop of Visby from 1885 to 1920 (left) King Oscar II of Sweden (and Norway) (right) who reigned at the time of the church's construction. Axel Haig was responsible for the restoration of Visby Cathedral in 1900.
